Scottsdale,
Arizona - the beauty of the Southwest
The beauty of the Sonoran Desert surrounds Scottsdale, where
world-class golf courses, innovative spas and luxurious resorts
abound. During the summer months, value packages are offered
at most Scottsdale properties, which range from five-star resorts
to more modest lodgings.
Golf enthusiasts have a choice of more than 174 courses in the
metropolitan area. Saguaros, washes and desert plants accent
the courses, which were designed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer,
Peter Dye, Robert Trent Jones, Robert "Red" Lawrence
and Jay Moorish as well as other top designers.
The courses host some of the most prestigious events on the
professional tour, including the Professional Golfers Assn.
(PGA) Phoenix Open held at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale
in January.
Scottsdale's destination spas center on the wellness of mind,
body and spirit. The unique spa treatments incorporate the indigenous
elements of the Sonoran desert and Native American healing techniques.
These treatments include ingredients such as desert nectar honey,
adobe clay, aloe and desert herbs, including juniper, sage,
sandalwood and lavender. Scottsdale spas offer treatments specifically
for golfers. Golf-oriented massages and treatments combine spa
and sport to make a golf vacation complete.
Outdoor enthusiasts visiting Scottsdale can explore the desert
on an off-road tour, venture into the McDowell Mountains on
horseback, raft down the Salt and Verde rivers or survey the
diverse landscape from a hot-air balloon. Other activities include
hiking, in-line skating and mountain bicycling.
Scottsdale is home to fine art dealers and collectors. More
than 125 galleries, studios and museums showcase art, sculpture
and arts and crafts, reflecting contemporary themes, Southwest
influences and classic schools.
The Scottsdale ArtWalk on Thursday evenings is a popular attraction,
and the new Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art adds to the
art scene.
The performing arts also flourish in Scottsdale. The Scottsdale
Center for the Arts offers a variety of live performances year-round,
including concerts by the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra.
Shoppers can explore everything from charming shops to upscale
malls. Rare antiques, one-of-a-kind crafts and jewelry, unique
clothing, unusual furnishings and Southwestern gifts are among
the many selections. Among the venues are el Pedregal, which
has Moroccan and Southwest styling; and the Borgata, which is
designed to resemble an Italian Renaissance village.
